Need to trim some fat from the budget? One way to do that is by lowering your auto insurance. Here are some tips to do that:
- The very best way to have low car insurance is to own a vehicle that qualifies for a discount or one that does not have a surcharge. If you are on the hunt for a new car call your insurance carrier and gets quotes prior to buying a car. Your insurance carrier will be able to tell you if any of the cars have a discount or surcharge.
- Are you an infrequent driver or do you drive less than 7,500 miles a year? Let your insurance company know this if they don’t already. You will most likely receive a discount since you are on the road less and have a lower chance of getting into an accident.
- It may sound simple but call up your car insurance company and ask them for discount. You might be surprised by what happens. Let them know if you have an airbag, theft alarm or don’t drive much. A buddy of mine called his Tampa auto insurance agent and simply asked for a discount and he received one.
- Do you own a home? Ask your home insurance carrier if you can receive a discount if they provide you with your auto insurance.
- Your insurance premiums will go down if you increase your deductibles on your collision or comprehensive insurance coverage.
- Do you drive an old clunker? You may want to consider dropping your collision insurance. Any claims will be limited to book value so if your vehicle is not worth much than explore losing this insurance. Call your carrier and see if the savings are worth it.
- Think twice about filing small claims. It might be better just to pay the repair out of your own pocket. Your premiums could go up more than the small expense.
- Don’t assume all insurance companies are going to quote you the same rates. Shop thoroughly for insurance as there can be a substantial difference between carriers,
- Have you had any changes in your life like marriage, buying a home or better grades? These can get you a discount. Getting older is another thing that can save you money. Older drivers are usually safer drivers thus less to insure.
- Be a safe driver. Insurance companies will naturally charge less to drivers who are not frequently in accidents or who avoid getting traffic violations.
- Are you a parent to a teenager? They can expensive to insure. Consider letting them share your care versus having their own.
- How is your credit rating? Some insurance companies are giving discounts to people who have a good rating.
Take this list and call your insurance carrier with these questions. It might save you a few bucks.
