We all know that there are many reasons to have insurance but do most self employed Americans really have private health insurance or self employed liability insurance? Out of all of the self employed people that I know I believe that about 10% of them actually have some type of health coverage. So what are the other 90% doing?
If I were to take a poll on the reason my friends do have coverage I would ask them:
Do you not have private health insurance because…
1- You can’t afford it?
2- You have never thought about it?
3- You don’t see the need for it?
I am not sure what the answer would be. Would I would hope that it would be that they can’t afford it because that would mean that they are at least trying or have tried to get it but because of money reason they can’t get it.
I have heard that 86% of all Americans are happy with their health coverage. So if the rest of the country is in the same position as my friends I was say whoopy… That is great that more than half of the 10% of Americans are happy but what about the others that can’t afford it. Even if you have to get Temporary Health Insurance until you can afford it or until you get covered by your work that would be better than nothing.
Do you know that the average baby born in a hospital costs around $25,000? If you are not insured how to you expect to cover that. One of the main reasons people are so far in debt is because they are paying for doctor bills because they did not have any health insurance when the accredit or sickness or whatever happened.
Please get out there and get some kind of coverage. I don’t care if it is the lowest amount ever you need to protect yourself and get some health insurance.
Liability insurance for self employed workers is another critical type of insurance to have if you are in the category of working for yourself. Self employed liability insurance will help to protect you for unexpected and uncovered events that are often holes in other types of insurance policies.
