Do you know your credit score rating? Did you know that a credit rating can have a major impact on your life aside from the label of ‘having bad credit?’ Taking the necessary steps to improve credit by eliminating debt is the first place to start.
Credit has always been important in making a major purchase such as buying a home or a new vehicle, but many employers are now performing credit checks before hiring and even some insurance companies are basing your premiums on your credit rating. For someone with bad credit this could mean losing great job opportunities or paying higher rates for insurance.
Repairing credit is not difficult, but it does require patience and commitment. The first step is to contact your creditors and inform them of your situation. If you are unemployed or hours have been decreased they may be able to help by lowering your monthly payments, temporarily lowering interest rates, removing late charges, or even deferring payments.
If your situation has escalated to collection agencies, explain the situation to them. Because they get a cut of what they collect, debt collections agencies are a little more lenient when it comes to payments. They may come across as the bad guy but most of them work off of commission so no payments means no paycheck.
When everything seems out of control consider a credit counseling agency. They will work with you to pay down your debt, which will improve credit over time. One of the great things about credit counseling services is that you no longer have to deal with the creditors. Everything is handled by the person assigned to your case. If you make your monthly payments on time your debt will decrease and your credit score will increase.
There is no magic wand to make your financial troubles go away. If you have fallen behind on your bills negotiating a repayment plan and paying on time is the only way to eliminate debt and get better credit.
